Using biomechanical tools as a clinical decision-making tool for children with developmental dysplasia of the hip

Overview:

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a childhood condition with abnormal formation of the ball and socket of the hip joint. Late diagnosed cases (≥3months) have increased in South Australia since the 1990s. These children have high rates of arthritis in early adulthood, attributed to abnormal hip joint biomechanics. Major surgery may be performed to improve hip joint alignment but there is no evidence that surgery improves loading or reduces arthritis risk. This study will be the first to investigate the relationship between hip joint anatomy and biomechanical loads in children with DDH, to guide clinical decision making.
